The Beautiful Hudson Valley (Zone 6a)

I have a 16" container outside my front door In which I rotate plants. For the cold weather I usually buy a small Dwarf Spruce, which I then plant in the ground in spring. Can anyone recommend another plant that thrives in the cold? I'm in zone 6a. Thanks!
