This does not look like, Hosta 'August Moon'.

August Moon is a gold colored hosta with wide heart shaped leaves.

"Heart-shaped leaves are bright gold to chartreuse depending on sun."

That was my first year with it, I purchased it at Lowes (but, we know how they mis-label things sometimes Glare ).

It looks quite different now (or so if memory serves me right); I can take a picture of it for you tomorrow. I'll gladly move it to the general entry if it isn't labeled right. Smiling

@virginiarose

Hmm, it doesn't appear as bright green as I remembered it in my head (but, I do have a 'City Lights' next to it, so I may be recalling that one Thinking ). I don't see a heart shape like on my 'City Lights' hosta. Do you feel this one was mislabeled?
I can take another picture if needed, the camera on my phone was not cooperating this morning. Grumbling

Well, that does not really look like it either. I had August Moon on my wish list and oh what a looker. Other things can cause the colors to change but the shapes of the leaves should be heart shaped and wider, I think. Let me look up city lights and see if I can grab a link to show you what I am talking about. Green Grin!

Ok, this is August Moon, see how the leaves are heart shaped? No worries about the gold color because if the plant is in full shade like it needs to be in a hot zone it might not be so gold.

This is City Lights, you can see the leaves are round shaped and so this (photo in question) is not the City Lights either.

BB Code:

So the photo you posted of City Lights is good, it has round leaves.

I will request my picture be moved to the general Hosta entry then. I'm a little bummed though. My birth month is August, so I was happy to have found a hosta in town with August in the name. Sad I'm not surprised it was mislabeled though. Glare

My 'City Lights' looks much nicer now. Well, now right now. Rolling on the floor laughing I accidentally broke off a couple leaves and it only had like eight leaves to start with (a slow grower for me, apparently). But, it is a stunner. All six leaves and all. Rolling on the floor laughing

Yes, I noticed you are the same as me. Virginia is very diverse but only the south eastern tip is in zone 8 and even that is the edge of the zone which is just the average temperature. I was shocked that you even found a hosta at Lowes, never-mind a healthy cultivar true to name. Growing hostas can be tricky in this zone. Look online for cultivars with plantaginea in the history.
https://www.plantdelights.com/...

You can maximize the cold spell by planting in pots instead of the ground, we almost never get a ground freeze so hostas are not too happy, but if you plant them above ground then the roots will freeze. I have kept hostas that way for up to five years but the ones in the ground will fizzle out after three years. Hosta's come and go around here, but I do love them. Check out Tony's article at Plant Delights, they actually grow hostas in zone 8 (NC) and you can order them online.

That's interesting! It snows in Northern Georgia and you have Savannah down South that has to worry about hurricanes if they come our direction. Blinking

Lowes and Home Depot here sell Hostas yearly. I've purchased almost all of mine from Lowes (only a couple from Home Depot). I think I have 11 hostas? Thinking One was here when we bought the house in 2017. I'm not sure how old that one is. I transplanted it to a shade garden that I made. For the most part, they've gotten bigger every year. I have a couple that seem slower growing though. Does planting in pots restrict their growth at all? I hope mine are around in five years or more. Sad I can't seem to successfully grow Coral Bells. Those fizzle our for me. I have one at the moment out of my original... five?

Our winters are odd. They're either relatively warm (like 70s in December Blinking Blinking ) or we have wind chills of 15 degrees. It does freeze here though. At some point. Sometimes in April. Rolling on the floor laughing

Right, we get snow just hardly ever a ground freeze. Mine do very good in pots and you can buy whatever you like and use them with the other hostas or separate. I am without right now because I need to replace my pots but pots are the answer if you want to extend their life. Without the proper dormancy period they will get weaker and weaker till they dye. I would definitely buy August Moon and give it a shot. (now you got me wanting one).
It is good that you can get hostas but remember they just ship them in from up north, very few are grown here much less thrive. But at that price you can afford to kill a few. Rolling on the floor laughing Whistling
I like a seller that grows them in my zone, they have the ones that are more heat tolerant. This one was in a pot for about 6 years, dappled shade under my cherry tree. Green Grin!
BB Code:

I have grown several in the ground with good success that were not considered heat tolerant, Designer Genes, and Victory come to mind and Vulcan and of course Plantaginea. Designer Genes is in a dark corner near back gate and has stayed gold and has been in the ground for five years. 'JUNE' is a great hosta, not listed as heat tolerant but mine has been in the ground for ten years! June will look different on each side of house depending on the amount of sun so buy four. D'Oh! I forgot to look at the places you listed. But, I'm sure they are out of my price range. Rolling on the floor laughing $6 for a hosta at Lowes does make it easier if it dies.

That's interesting! That may be why my MIL's that she keeps in pots keep exploding. Blinking I know we can't do peonies here because it doesn't get cold enough (although, my MIL has two— she lives in a neighboring city). She grows things that if I tried to replicate it, they'd die. Glare

That's sad that your Abiqua died. Sad

I haven't heard of those, but I will keep my eyes peeled since they are heat tolerant. I have one June. It is one of my favorites. Lovey dubby She looks bleached by the end of August, but she seems happy otherwise.

Invincible does great for me. Do you have one? It seems to take the weather here really well.

It is all merchandise to them, I never purchased a hosta from a big box store because of Hosta virus X. Crossing Fingers! So far so good!! Hurray!

I have learned the hard way that Lowes sells plants that die in hot, humid weather (so, not good for Georgia Glare ). Their whole we market plants for your location isn't quite true.

What is a we market plant? Blinking

In the past I had the ability to order liners real cheap and I experimented on my own. I know it is harder now to do this but I will keep my eyes open for cheap liners. My favorite companies seem to be going out of business. Crying

Here is my nursery bed I built with my husbands help. I planted 50 liners in here to get them use to the weather while they were young, better than buying big plants and sending them into shock. Green Grin!

Lowes says they pick plants best suited for your location. I was attempting to quote them by saying, "we market plants suited for your location." But, I don't think market was the right word. Big Grin But, I've found a few plants that after I came home and researched them, they don't do well in Georgia. Confused So, I have to be careful buying stuff from lowes sometimes. Hilarious!

Sad There was a company I bought some Yuccas from. They closed last October after twenty years in business. I only ordered the yuccas from them, but I spoke with one of the owners on the phone and they seemed super accommodating, so I imagine they were around for so long for a reason. We only had two local based nurseries here, but one closed a few years ago. It seems like all the good companies close. Sad

Oooh, that bed is going to look fabulous!
