I'm been planting a lot of peonies, but I keep some space for must buy peonies for 2021, one of them is Etched Salmon. What are about you? I like to get some ideas, since I won't be buying a lot next year. But I'm eagerly waiting for the 2021 catalog to see what's available.

SoCal, Etched Salmon is a must have. There's not anything else like it.

I really don't have much on my wishlist right now. Two of them are woody peony Country Comfort and herbaceous peony Adrienne Clarkson. The first will have to come from Simmons in NZ. The second I do not have a source for.

I'm sure as the catalogs open I will find some varieties that appeal to me.

I keep a really brief personal want list. I was fortunate and cleared my want list for 2019 going into 2020 (Juliska and Myrtle Gentry). By mid-year, another couple of peonies began to appeal to me:

May Lilac. Karen's & Frank's photos sold me on it. Super color profile and fragrant.

White Wings. A shade tolerant peony - what?! I want to give it a go just to see if it is a viable peony solution for those with a lot of shade. It also produces some huge 12" single white flowers. Not noted for a fragrance - which is a negative to me - but it has some unique attributes. It's evidently fairly wide-spread in the EU.

I want to take a break from buying in 2021 to figure out what does best in my new garden. I'm sure I'll order a few but keep it under 50 total and those will probably be trees and Itohs.

I have NO SPACE!!!! But still can squeeze a couple I will try to buy yellow mloko, Ballerina and Impossible Dream and Hanakisoi (for a pot). And I know how it works for me: once I see something good I buy it

I probably will not be adding more next year except for the double red fernleaf from Fina Gardens. Nor sure if I can restrain myself if something wonderful pops up in the Solaris Farms catalog though.

I am in the process of downsizing. Never thought I would dispose of a peony but I got rid of Negrita that I bought from Gilbert Wild. It is the blandest and most uninteresting red peony. So into the trash it went. I have another peony that's a mislabel Chestine Gowdy that will also be eliminated next year. I have a bunch of seedlings peonies that are mostly single pinks that will be culled after next year. If anyone is interested in single pink peonies, let me know,. I can send these for postage.

Karen, I agree with you. Time is too short and space is limited to keep peonies that you do not enjoy and some of them are just not exciting. I got rid of quite a few and do not regret it. I have a couple on a wish list, but who knows when they will be available in Canada ? Not in a hurry anyway.

I feel the same about roses, last year I bought over 100, maybe 110, this year I've already gave my brother 10.

This used to be my cactus area, now I moved all my previous peonies out here. I hope they'll survive.

Karen, I ordered the Fernleaf from Fina...so hope it does well! If it makes it thru the first year, with my soil, it will probably take hold and do fine..or it won't at all.

Liz.. keeping it under 50. Love it! I agonize over 1 and my husband buys things buy the case! Of course, he doesn't plant things usually.

I want to buy old fashioned fragrant cutting ones, but I need to figure out if they are going to drive me crazy with flopping and where to put them (minor details...always minor details!)

I plan to cut more flowers this year. I have lots of vases. But I will put them outside in my California room, otherwise my husband and I will be sneezing a lot.

Alex, you are right. Space and labor are in short supply so any plants that can no longer excite me will have to be culled. It is still hard for me to see a perfectly healthy plant goes into the trash, but I feel so much lighter after it is gone and done.

Good luck with your fernleaf, Annie! Sunny location, very well drain soil and mulching in the summer should help it thrive, I believe. I have such a location for it ready to go next year.

Wow, SoCal! That is a lot of roses to plant in one year. What are your top 5 favorites from the 100+ roses that you planted?

My sister loves to cut flowers for indoor arrangements. I used to like them until I can no longer stand their scent and the mess they make after they shatter. My sister really enjoys the bouquets so it is ok with me.

I've got a fairly ugly NOID white single that also has a negative scent. I considered culling this fall. It was sent to me as a 'gift' for my first order with Direct Gardening but it's bloom was very loose and not at all fetching. And it sort of stinks if you take the time to cup a bloom and sniff.

But I talked myself into letting it get to at least year 3 (and probably year 5) before lowering the boom. I've come to recognize that young peonies aren't putting on the best show and I am hopeful that both the quality of the blooms and their quantity improve with time.

I also want a white, a green and a blush. Any suggestions? I love single, cupped blooms. Fragrant is preferable. Is there a single green? Cruciger comes up on helpmefind as a single green but I can't find a picture of it let alone someplace that sells it.

Solaris sells a white peony called Confetti. No pics. Anyone growing that?


Finally, I'm curious about tree peonies but a bit nervous to try. They would be a pricey experiment. Kinkaku and Cup of shining Night both look good.

I got a single this year, not sure which, it came from a bag of peonies I bought from Costco. I moved this to the previously grown cactus bed as a test. I know this one flowered in my backyard, the cactus bed is more dry, so I will see if I get any flower. But it also shows people can grow peonies in zone 10 in partial shade.

Wow, I got this NOID as a gift several years ago...



It seems to line-up well with the Rock River Farms variety. This photo was from this spring and this bloom survived the multiple frosts though I think that it was slightly misshapen. Should you be interested in a small division, it might be large enough for an in-situ division next fall - though 2022 is more likely. It will also hopefully have a few more better developed blooms next year.

The bees really loved this one. The foliage is narrow and a brighter shade of green. It has weathered the year better than most peonies and isn't a bad shrub. I don't think that it will ever require support. I wasn't a fan of the fragrance.

Will keep an eye out for it next year. Hidden Springs aparently had it .

To me yours looks more like Horizon. Both are very similar but Horizon looks slightly more crepe in texture (to me at least). Not too many pics of May Music to compare.
