Hi,

I have a ginger plant in a pot that is sprouting. I noticed that the soil has settled and there isn't enough soil in the pot. It only has 19cm (7.5 inches) of soil and I want to add another 10 cm (4 inches) of soil.

My question is do I dig up the plant and 1) add the soil or 2) can I add the soil to the top (ie without digging up the plant).

I prefer doing option 2 as I'm worried if I dig up the plant I might disturb the roots and kill it.

Have included a photo to show the ginger plant in the pot.

Thank you for your help

Not sure where you are, but ginger generally likes the top of the soil and "runs" along the top, so big and shallow is better. If you want to add soil, I have carefully tipped the plant and soil out of my pot, put it on a plate, and put soil in the bottom, then very carefully eased the plant and soil off the plate onto the soil in the pot. Filled in as necessary. It took about 5 days for the plant to be happy again.

Everyone I have heard or read says to keep the plant at the same level in the soil, a few veggies are the exception. It will kill shrubs/trees quickly if you bury their roots.
