Thread OP

Hi all, first post here!

Wondering if anybody is able to shed light on what's happening to my Strelitzia nicolai. I purchased it last weekend at a plant market, haven't repotted it, water and fertilized it lightly once, placed it somewhere with bright indirect sun.

Many thanks
:)

Has it gotten any worse? It looks to me like it got bumped/bent in being moved around. As much light as you can will help it stay healthy and prevent over-watering.

looks like damage as the new leaf was still tender, and bent. New leaves should not be a problem

I agree, this is mechanical damage of some kind. Possibly it was bent or broken when in transit from the grower. Pot it up, move it gradually to a place with full sun, water and fertilize generously as the weather warms up, and you will see very beautiful new leaves coming along. Good luck.

Oh, wanted to also say these are not too great as house plants as they get extremely large. Mine grow to 14ft in my garden in 2 years, and make large clumps of huge fat (8in. thick or more) stems. A single leaf can be 9ft. long. Unless you have a 2-story atrium, it's going to outgrow any indoor space in a year or two. If you're not prepared to accommodate a really huge plant, I'd advise you take it back to wherever you got it and buy something smaller. Cannas or Philodendron have big, beautiful tropical foliage, but don't get so out-sized.
