I've been trying to get red raspberry canes for the last two years. I placed orders with 2 different vendors over the last two years and I've gotten dried brittle canes both times which did not sprout. This has set be back in getting a harvest of red raspberries. Looking for a vendor that provides healthy bare root plants. Any recommendations?

You might have luck finding a local person who has extras. That's usually what I do. I ordered one from home depot this spring. It had a very slow start but we'll see what it's like next year. I don't know the best place to buy them online but I prefer getting plants locally so I can see what they look like. It's a bit more expensive usually but worth it if the plants live.

LOL. I AM the local person that gives away black raspberry bushes every year thanks to the birds. Smiling I can see 3 or 4 plants out of 25 not being viable, but twice I haven't gotten a single plant to grow from two different suppliers? Giving me a complex, but I know how dry the plants were when I received them. I even contacted one of the sellers last year w that the plants were very dry but I was going to plant them. They assured me that's how the berries arrive but not one sprouted. Their strawberries sprouted well, 80% success rate, and were great plants. I did get a refund from both vendors, but I'd really just like to have red raspberries...

I've ordered from Stark Bro before. I think it was a long time ago and maybe recently. Might have been where I got the black raspberries. Oh I checked. I actually ordered from them this past spring. Honeyberry plants. They didn't do so well. Sad Waiting to see if they survive and come back out next spring.

Whether this is true or not, I like to order plants grown in the same part of the country where they will have a permanent home. Not only raspberries but other plants like flowers and trees seem to do much better grown under the same climatic conditions as my gardens. Oregon roses and other plants struggle in my location. Same with North and South Carolina plants. Upper mid-west grown plants do much better here in Nebraska.

My imagination?

Your idea makes good rational sense. However, the strawberries that I received from the same company did incredibly well, at least the ones that came out of dormancy. I THINK I recall reading some information on the website that I bought the strawberry plants from that said they propagated their plants in a greenhouse and in a sand medium? I know the bareroots were very sandy.

Maybe I"ll look for raspberries from vendors in this area. Though my problem seems to be quality of the bareroot canes rather then the plant doing well once established.
