Thread OP

Has anyone got a Janco Greenhouse? Interested in feedback.

Or maybe someone could recommend one to me or provide feedback on what I've seen so far. Wanting approx. 8x12 (must be under 100 sq ft to not require permit in my city), in Oklahoma, where we have high winds (had 65 mph this summer in one storm) and hail occasionally. Prefer to stay in the $2K-6K depending on looks, what's included, R factor, etc. I want to start seeds, grow cold weather crops in cold season, and overwinter some citrus trees and tropical hibiscus. I really want something that will withstand occasional winds in my area, so wind gust factor is one of my main concerns.

I am considering the Janco Palmetto, BC Cottage, Monticello Mojave, Arcadia Glasshouse, Sunglo, and Grow More 8 x 11. The Grow More is the cheapest of the bunch at $1899 with a 10MM polycarbonate, and a 70 mph wind rating, is China made, but they are out of stock until at least April/May of next year. The Janco Palmetto is only 8 x 10 but can be bought for $3000 + shipping, with glass or 8mm polycarbonate, and a 90mph wind rating. The Monticello Mojave has a bronze tinted roof which is supposed to help keep it cool in summer, so I thought that was appealing. The Arcadia Glasshouse looks great too, 105mph wind rating, also has bronze roof, but is quite pricey as is the BC greenhouse which I have wanted for years and just realized their polycarbonate is only 6mm, which I don't really think is adequate. The Sunglo looks strong but that style is not the most appealing to me.

I'd appreciate any input or feedback on these or other recommended models. Thanks so much.

Hi @Luvmybec and welcome to the forum Welcome!

One I am partial too (since I own one) and has been wind tested up to 85mph is the Sunshine Gardenhouse.

https://www.gardenhouse.com/

I have had it for 5 years now, and it has stood up well to all kinds of weather conditions including strong winds and heavy snow.

I've had my Arcadia Glasshouse greenhouse for 8 years now and it's been great. It's partly under a black walnut tree so I get walnuts dropping on the roof every fall. It makes a horrendously loud noise but no damage at all to the polycarbonate roof (hope I haven't jinxed myself). It's very well built.

Customer service is outstanding too.

Go as big as you can afford. Dealing with the city's permit process is nothing compared to wishing you had more space. It's very easy to fill up a greenhouse, plants grow, your culture interests expand . . . My GH is a lean-to, easily accessible from the house. It's paradise to walk out there in the winter.

Caryliss, thanks for your response. I was looking at the Arcadia again. It seems to be the strongest I've seen but also the most expensive. Did you assemble it yourself or have it built and if you assembled, were the instructions good?

I had them build it since they are local to me and I'm not very handy.

Our greenhouse was built by Florian Greenhouses in 2001 on top of the garage with entry through an upstairs room. We are still very happy with it. Walls and ceiling are double glass and the whole structure is truly sturdy. Florian has local representatives.

I'm the same way with mine, but it's so stuffed full that I always wish it was larger.

I had to look that up. It looks like a cute little camper! I guess many are using them as tiny homes now.

I've had problems downloading pics so I will just have to describe . This weekend it was sunny and in the 50s Saturday not a hint of a bite of cold but cool breeze like blowing through snow men some where not here standing in formation like the terracotta soldiers in China . Just enough cool to inspire me to weather seal the house and greenhouse . Sunday cloudy but hoodie weather so I laid on edge a quick temp job around my base of my greenhouse concrete 8x16 pavers , than using left over plastic on the inside i sealed around the bottom stapling the top and bricks for bottom , than a cold rain sat in it got dark so I built a fire in the house heated some water and soaked my feet . Good nite .
