My order of jiffy seed pods came in a few days back, and I noticed they seem a tad larger than the pods that came with the trays I had last year. The trays I have have molded in recesses for the seemingly smaller pods.

The trays I used last year worked out ok, but I was constantly moving pods due to condensation from the cover soaking the pods on the edges.
I have seen trays with foam that holds the pods that I have wanted to try, and it occurred to me I have some closed cell foam here. What are your thoughts on cutting 1.5" holes in the foam to hold the jiffy pods and laying that in the trays? I tried a piece of foam with a 1.5" hole saw and it made a nice hole by hand, albeit a little messy.

No responses? Hmm, well...what did you end up doing? I personally start my seedlings in 16 to 20 ounce styrofoam cups.

I had forgot I even posted this!

I wound up soaking the pellets and just stuffing them in the flats above the recesses meant for the smaller pellets- worked out ok, since they were all pressed together the roots wanted to grow together some, but I got them transplanted soon enough

Sometimes we just gotta do things...and it all works out. Glad you got it done! How many seedlings do you normally start?

And, just out of curiosity, did these seedlings go into a greenhouse or something...seems a tad earlier to be starting plants. Confused

I start around 100, this year it was about 144. After I potted them up, I think I'm around 100 now. I didn't start them when I made this post, was just getting ready early. I started most of the seeds at the end of Jan, they will be going in a greenhouse here in a few weeks.

Sounds like a plan to me! I don't start near that many. I usually have 20-25 transplants growing...tomatoes and peppers. I use 16 or 20 ounce styrofoam cups...no potting up before transplanting to the garden. Call me lazy. Thumbs up
