anyone out there have any luck with shallots, I'm from in northern ontario, I plant my garlic in the fall and it overwinters nicely, have i missed the opportunity for shallots by not planting them in the fall?, any tips for planting shallots,

Back in '09 we grew them, and got a lot but many were so small that it was too much work to use them. They did taste great.

pirl, did you start them from seed, I'm looking at the seed catalogues and can get shallot sets that I think I can plant in the spring just like your traditional "dutch set onion"

Probably not. Most likely from sets. You could do both if you have the space.

I have grown both onions and shallots from seeds in Minn.

Seeds will give you a smaller yield than sets.
Either way how good the yield is depends on how good the soil is which generally means no weeds, plenty water and fertilizer.

My results for any allium have improved hugely since I started to grown them on a berm ( a ridge of soil around the garden.)
The soil there is of looser consistency than the garden proper, also has a high content of old potting soil and last year mulched leaves as I rake it up fresh every year so it get surface soil which includes both of the privious.
