I caught myself wondering why truckers (as in truck drivers) would have a favorite tomato, and then thought the name might refer to truck farmers. Finally, I decided, given the placement of the apostrophe in the varietal name, it could refer to person named Trucker. Any idea?

No idea, but it's a good guess.

Thanks for doing the dog work to research this. At least one of my guesses was correct. I'm happy, but I'd have been just as happy if a fourth, unthought of by me, explanation proved the correct one. But your paraphrasing from Burpee suggests the name should be 'Truckers' Favorite', not 'Trucker's Favorite', as it appears in the database. Care to tackle that bit of editing?

I just checked online, myself, and I see that the correct cultivar name is 'Trucker's Favorite', so the database is correct. Nice to know.

Also, if you click on the illustration, it has the name there as 'Trucker's Favorite'. And it's from the Burpee's catalog, and they oughta know...
