Thread OP

I got this Plant two years ago from my grandpa, it's and old specimen. I identity it as Brunfelsia, even though it doesn't change flower color or have fragrance, it's been doing better in summer and worse in winter, but atm it looks quite bad. The picture where it's in bloom is from last summer, the others from now. I know they need rainwater and a lot of sun, which it gets. I thought it was spider mites but I can't see any/ or webs and have been treating it against pests for the last couple of months without any improvement. I started using leaf fertilizer on the yellowing leaves. It has a couple if flower buds atm, considering cutting it back after bloom.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, posted on reddit a couple of times and got no relpies

Welcome! Brunfelsia is a challenging plant, in part because it normally requires a semi-dormant period during the colder months in order to produce flowers later on. Reduced light (bright indirect) and cooler temps (preferably below 60 degrees F.) are recommended during this time.

It looks like yours has not been pruned in a while and that doing so will keep it from becoming unruly, but also help it set new buds. Pruning yours will help reduce some of the bare stems and yellow leaves.

The leaf yellowing is concerning. It might be from too much direct sun in winter. But it may also be that the soil needs to be acidified.

Thank yoooou for replying! I've read that it's challenging to keep them indoors, and found little on the internet,so this is greatly appreciated Thank You!
I'll cut her back then, I've been a little scared doing a drastic pruning, how much foliage should I leave?
The overwintering was not ideal until now but I've recently moved and next winter should offer exactly those conditions.
I'll look into acidification of the soil, again thanks so much Hurray!

Two points WillC didn't mention.

Constantly treating a plant for insect infestations takes its toll on plants. There is such a thing as too much. You don't really know whether your plant has insects or is suffering from pesticide overdose.

Foliar sprays treat symptoms. The leaves look better but the underlying problem causing the yellow leaves has not been addressed. Its like taking antacid tablets for an ulcer. You may feel better but the ulcer is still there.

Prune as much as you can stand. If the roots are healthy, and the light and watering is good then you can prune back as much you want and new growth will emerge on each pruned back stem and grow out from there.

Hi,
I know this thread is a few years old but I am wondering how your Brunfelsia is doing. I am also growing one indoors and have run into similar issues. Did the trimming back and acidification of the soil help?
Any details would be great.
Thank you!
