I just planted tomatoes, squash and cucumbers. At what point should I fertilize?

& What's the best fertilizer?
Also, I have a very clay soil- would these do better in a raised garden bed instead?

Name: Dr. Demento Jr.
Minnesota (Zone 3b)
When planting use root boost and slow release of your choice.
Depending on your soil bagged cow manure and dry blood works for me also.
