Thread OP

I have been looking for Saxon-sempervivum, and have been unable to find it in the U.S., or even someone who will ship to the States for a decent price. I have been looking for over a year (when I had ordered one that took a month to get here, and died). Anyone know? HELP!

Welcome! wp1521

It's not an easy one to get, I've just about given up on it myself. Making it's way around the camp fire slowly though, another year or two and it'll be much easier to find.
A while back I saw some on ebay with a phytosanitary certificate option at an additional $20 to a plant that cost about as much. You might check there also.

I have a question about Saxon.

I have Saxon. Here it is. There is only one rosette that looks like Saxon so I am wondering if the others are still considered Saxon or just what they are?

Good morning Melissa.
I see you have the same thing going on with your 'Saxon' that mine has been doing.
I separate the reverted offsets, keeping them separate from the one we know as 'Saxon'.
This is what my reverted offsets look like:
Thumb of 2021-04-16/valleylynn/0aa44c

They are much hardier than the pale 'Saxon' clones.

Lynn, my Saxon came from your Saxon so I would imagine we would get the same results.

Although your reverts are definitely different colored than mine. I think mine are quite pretty but wish they were more Saxon.

Will the reverted plants produce Saxon clones or will they produce like themselves? And do the reverted ever revert back to Saxon?

Possibly, if there are traces of variegation on the undersides of the leaves. Saxon has (probably) CHIMERAL variegation so it would be a guessing game to see if the variegation continues. If you've heard of Philodendron Pink Princess, its also chimeral variegation. Many people buy the pink princess for a lot of money, but it ends up reverting because it's chimeral variegation.

IDK If saxon can get variegation back.

Once it goes all green the game is over! It would be best if you separate the good variegated rosettes from the non.

Great explanation Alex.
I agree with Kevin, separate. I have not had the reverted form turn back to 'Saxon' colors, or produce 'Saxon' colored offsets.

I have moved the Good Saxon into it's own pot. Far away from those Bad Saxons that might corrupt it.

In moving Good Saxon I noticed that is starting to put out a bunch offsets. Sure hope they take after Mom!

I have a questions about Saxon.

What do we call those the revert and don't have that pale look?

Are they still considered Saxon?

They would no longer be considered 'Saxon'. I have a bunch of the reversions. I don't think we know what 'Saxon' came from. Seems like mine throw out a lot of those non-Saxon offsets. Sad

I should check my email before we go writing this in digital stone, but I feel like I recall Lazlo saying Saxon was a sport from mettenianum, so reversions would theoretically be s. mettenianum. Another issue with this is that "mettenianum" itself is a name which comes with some doubt attached, Mountain Crest Gardens sells a beautiful plant under that name which appears to be a wulfenii x tectorum but I know our database has the mettenianum label synonymous with tectorum which would indicate it to be a scientific name that could blanket any tectorum cultivar or species collection. I suppose if that's the case mettenianum doesn't really mean much and one could argue that using it to describe the Mountain Crest plant would infact be appropriate. Another possibility is that I am incorrect about the Mountain Crest plant having any wulfenii blood and that it is in fact a pure tectorum collection, distinct from other tectorums and should be titled as s. tectorum var. mettenianum, in that case 'Saxon' couldn't be a variegated version of the "variety mettenianum" because your reversions don't resemble the Mt. Crest offering which is a sort of soft purple color somewhat similar to 'Magnificum'.

So there's a very educated way to say "I don't know" Rolling on the floor laughing

I like the look of my reverted Saxon so I guess I will just designate it as a NOID and toss it in with my NOID collection. Some of which are big favorites.

That's a great link Lynn,
Those images of tectorum var. tectorum (mettenianum) do look an awful lot like the reversions you two have, a small green tectorum with redder than average tips, I think that's it. A NoID is a NoID, but in this case we have a plant that is actually traceable, you could always write a question mark on the label if you're still uncertain I suppose.
Unfortunately that var. tectorum (mettenianum) doesn't look much like my MCG Sempervivum 'Mettenianum', so that side of the riddle remains unsolved.
