Here's my jade tree with all the spent flowers. Should I remove all spent flowers or just let them fall naturally? Any advantages of removing them manually? Thanks

That must have been gorgeous when it was flowering! I wish I had an answer for you Andy, and I'm surprised no one has answered this - you might have better luck posting it in the "Ask a Question" forum, or in the "Cactus and Succulents" forum. Smiling

An advantage of manual removal could be improved appearance if you are just tired of looking at the brown bits.

@Weedwhacker Yes, the flowers are white and they cover the whole tree in the winter so it looks very nice. As you can see, there are tons of brown bits so there were tons of flower this past winter.

The flowers fall off on their own and don't leave any little stubs like you would if you cut them off.

Ursula from Jersey- show me your bloomimng jade plant-,
I dont need to see you clean it with a vacuum, - it would be nice if you have that video- I just want to see a singe flower on your Jersey Jade so we can assess if you're not entirely making this up.

Andy- Jades don't bloom where I live- but every perenial bush can benefit from a clean "dead head". Plants spend a ton of energy to put up flowers, which is great, - and ten times that again to make seeds, which is a waste. Their flowers are the most "growing" parts- cut off the flowers after they bloom so your plant doesn't waste more energy trying to mature seeds you don't want. it will spend that energy growing leaves and branches to prepare for more blooms next spring.

Why should I make this up?
I leave my Jade plants in the Fall outside ca a month longer than my other plants, subjecting them to nights in the forties F. That initiates budding and my big plant always blooms in November into December. I am sure I have pics on my IPad, have to look for one.

Surely I have shared that old picture already where I used this plant in its earlier years as a Christmas tree? By that time the blooms are just done and cleaned up, yes with a vacuum cleaner! Smiling

Tiffany, yes, the plant sits on its own cart ( a cart for for easier maneuvering the steps into/from the house) and its indoor spot is in the living room in a bright corner by 2 windows/facing South and West. In Summer it sits under the Dogwood.
Thanks for the Acorn Smiling

Jades bloom everywhere if given the right conditions but I have never seen one set seed. I suspect that's because they bloom at a time of year when pollinators are not out and about.

The vacuum sounds like a great idea. Untangling all those dead blooms is a real pain. I'm thinking shop vac...

Impressive Ursula! I am not good with Jades. or succulents and sedums for that matter. I can't seem to get the lighting correct and the watering. I have a struggling Jade planted with Sanseveria which is doing very well. all the upstairs plants get south exposure all day. the jade is reaching. I've moved it forward so it can get more sun{no curtains blocking the sun} but it's not enough. it did ok on the front porch during the summer but only got morning sun however it got more water. I was also given a succulent/sedum to take care of that I know nothing about-not even its name. it's "leaves" are tube like with small brown indentations on the top. I'm clueless on how to take care of this. Sighing!

Brenda, thanks so much!! Smiling
You know, I am giving this some thought. I grow a lot of different succulents and I do try to observe their seasonal behavior. Regarding the Jades, lots of sun and good watering and some fertilizer during the outdoor season here in NJ and only very sparingly watered indoors. I don't want to see them growing indoors in Winter, just blooming and then after that staying reasonably plump until May, when the cycle starts again.
I do the same with Pachypodiums, ( dropping all leaves) Adeniums and similar.
Now regarding Echeverias, Sedums and such, again, I don't expect any growth now during the indoor Winter, I just let them slow down until Spring, when the growth cycle outside starts again Some are starting to bloom now.
I find that some Haworthias and Gasterias don't seem to follow my seasons, they seem happy in the Winter indoors in a bright spot and appreciate some extra water without turning to mush.
So perhaps it might be a good idea to see how they grow in their natural habitat, look at the weather report of that region? When is rainy season/ how much rain?
Btw for the fun of, try a Bonsai Jade next Spring/Summer

Just some thoughts...

I am totally at a loss. the sans was the main plant in a garden bowl arrangement from Lowes a year ago. everything else died because I had to bring it in for the winter. I have no problem with sanseverias having grown them in the past but anything else along those lines dies. i do have hens and chicks outside and they're doing great. but me and these succulent, cacti and everything else similar-it just never ends well. forget about aloe. I think it's the lighting because I am not an over waterer. I do have a huge, very healthy Orchid Cactus and a very large hatioria salicornoides. you'll have to look that one up. after this I guess I should stick to what I know and do well with. the jade came in with the rest of the bowl planting- and yes there are drainage holes. I know they like more water than the sans does so I've been watering carefully. and that other little plant-got no clue.

Tiffany thank you! It is a gollum jade and it's doing well! it's so small it was hard for me to really get a handle on what it was doing so I left it alone and stopped fretting over it. to my surprise it has started putting out new growth. This plant has a really weird growing habit. but I noticed extra green tubes yesterday and gave it a drink. It seems to be ok. I think when it's time for plant camp this little guy will really take off. Thumbs up
