Prevent Algae from Growing in Your Birdbath

To keep algae growth from your bird bath drop some pre-1982 copper pennies in. I have what I would call a normal size bird bath & I use 7 pennies. The reason for the pennies being pre-1982 is that before that year, the pennies contained copper, a natural algicide. You could also use a small length of copper pipe or tubing, or any other copper coin. I have found this to work extremely well with the exception of those times when the temperatures stay above 90 for extended periods. Copper is not safe for fish so this would not be a good thing to use in a fish aquarium or a pond that has fish in it.

Thread OP

I'm going to try the pennies but I'm in S.W. New Mexico to be exact. Is there anyway to help with calcium deposits caking in the birdbath??? Since water here evaporates so fast I have this problem even with filtered water. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks Rich

Rich, The only thing that I can suggest is perhaps vinegar. I did post another birdbath algae preventative thing using vinegar. I use vinegar around the house for lime scale. We have notoriously hard water here in Florida and it's a constant battle against the lime scale buildup. It makes your faucets and sinks look ugly and even your dishes glasses and stuff. I don't think you can use a whole lot of it in a birdbath though. I think it's a half a cap or a capful. You'd have to look up the tip I posted on that. I am not where I can look that up for you at the moment.
