I'm regrading the side of my house. I have a bed of rock mulch that runs the length of my house and about five feet out. Its about an inch and a half to 2 inches thick. Its 10 years old and not in great condition. My plan was to dig up the rocks, tear up the protective weed blocker, add dirt, rake it, tamp it, add new weed blocker and put the rocks back. But the rocks are not in the best shape, interlaced with dirt and old roots. I'd like to start fresh, but I'm wondering if I could just leave the old layer of rocks there, cover them with dirt and proceed from there. The original plan it super labor intensive and won't look as nice when done.

hyperchord24, I'd do the whole tear out and clean up the rocks before putting them back down.
If needed you can add more rocks over the top. I'm not a fan of landscape fabric, how about
putting down cardboard. In the long run go the extra mile so you will be happy with the end
results.

Never heard of using cardboard of all things. And cleaning out 2+ yards of landscaping stone is not something I was planning on doing, nor do I know how to do efficiently

Daughter had a similar situation with the rock, she put it on Craigs List, your's for the taking. After it was gone, we mulched the area, giving her time to think what plant material she wanted to plant. If the weed barrier has been there that long, more than likely the ground beneath will be like concrete from all of the rock fines.
