Hi there... I make my home in Oklahoma City...
and I'm wondering if Oklahoma is considered a Southwestern state?
And if so, do any other Oklahomans write in?

Hi John.

I think most of us here are from Arizona and New Mexico. I think the growing conditions are probably different here then what you have in Oklahoma.

However, all are welcome just not a lot happening on this forum most of the time.

There is a Midwest forum you could check on. Might fit your climate better.

Well, that depends. From where I am, Oklahoma City is North Eastern and Tucson is Northern.
I traded mesquite beans (seeds) for Siberian Elms with a man from Oklahoma. The Siberian Elm thrives in this area. I thought it was a good trade as one man's shade tree is another man's invasive pest.
We are all gardeners and grow many of the same plants. There are some items that are unique to the desert, such as watering systems and watering issues but I believe OK is pumping water and irrigating also.
Southwest, as a gardening experience extends well into Southern Utah, California, West TX, Nevada as well as AZ and NM. There should be more folks posting here but mostly it is plant specific. I grow Iris. So there are forums where I talk to people from wherever Iris grows. I can't talk about mesquite or Mexican Bird of Paradise so there is a need for this forum.
I would just say "Western" and Oklahoma is Western Smiling
In any case, Welcome!
From what I see, just about nobody writes in. We could be the start of something, aye?

Thanks to both of you for squaring me off on this forum.

Let's see if I can't make a small contribution to some of the things you write about.. or don't...............................

Where to begin?

Mt. Lemmon and a small meadow at the top that overlooked the entire valley, Sabino Canyon on Sunday afternoons, Speedway Blvd., sunsets at Gates Pass, the fossils beneath the stadium, the train from San Antonio to L.A. that stopped in Tucson at 2AM, The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, the Saguaro National Forest, Pinnacle Peak's, Tombstone, the Shady Lady of Tombstone, perfect acoustics at the Grady Gammage Auditorium at ASU in Tempe, Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West in Phoenix, Paolo Soleri's studio way out on north Scottsdale Rd., Arcosanti, Jerome, Red Rock Canyon, "A" Mountain, Kitt Peak, the Lowell Observatory, San Xavier del Bac Mission... classes in Southwest Indian Art, Asian Philosophy and Landscape Architecture at U.A., living in an old adobe house two blocks from campus, the old Italian guy across the street who grew the most visually beautiful vegetable garden I've ever seen, his tomatoes and raddichio, the little Mexican restaurant somewhere on Campbell Ave. that served Green Corn Tamales once a year, a night-blooming Cereus that generated an annual party and celebration...
Sorry, I got carried away........................................................................

Sometimes emails are memories........................... Thanks.

Well hello, y'all. I'm from Oklahoma and I've searched for the right area forum several times. Apparently, we are still no man's land because no one wants to claim us. It don't matter. It's all right. I just run around and read other forums about other folks' gardens and plants and things. Anyway, Okie here from the NW corner in the plains.
I fight drought and grasshoppers and Bermuda grass and grasshoppers and sandburs and grasshoppers. I grow whatever I can get to survive. I adore working outside in my yards. Makes me happy.
Y'all have a good one. Smiling

Crickets…. Just realized this post is two years old.

Hi and welcome Angela! As you can see from the date of the post right before yours, this site isn't particularly active. Don't know why not; there are actually quite a few southwestern gardeners on NGA. Most of us just post on sites specific to our interests. Maybe your post will encourage more traffic here. Feel free to join in anywhere that interests you. Thumbs up

Another vagabond Okie wandering around. I'm in central Okla, so not quite southwest, but I have plenty of sand for this to be a desert. But not mild enough to classify as Midwestern, either. Us Okies are a mixed bag lol.
