Thread OP

Hi I have a cactus that was doing so well last year then over the winter took a turn and now looks like it is getting worse. There's the chance it was over watered during some building work at the end of last year. We water it roughly once a week but more coming into summer. It lives in a room currently that is sunny in the morning but shaded in the afternoon. I have been waiting for it to bounce back but it's not looking good so far. Really keen to bring it back to life if you have any recommendations! Thanks, Henry.

Try repotting to get rid of dead roots.

I think it's gone. The plant was not getting nearly enough light. It needs to "see" the sun for hours a day year round with no curtain or blinds in the way. Usually that means a position right in front of your sunniest southerly facing window.

Don't give up on it. You have to remember that cactus stores up water in the body of the plant and does not need frequent watering. I trimmed my prickly pear back in March and just found one of the pieces in the corner of my greenhouse. It was still green. I trimmed off the dried area where I had pruned it off and now I have it sitting in some dirt. I expect new growth within the next few months. I have done this before :).

I would stop watering it and repot it in dry cactus soil. Do not water it after repotting for at LEAST two weeks. I'm definitely not an expert, but I have a large number of cacti. Watering once a week is way too often. Especially with it indoors where it is cool. It will need much less water in that case. You should go at least two to three weeks between watering. If you really can't control yourself, just dribble some water (like a tablespoon) on the plant once a week. And yes, MORE sunlight as mentioned before :).

Good luck!

Hi I don't really know much when it comes to cacti but I find that it helps my ailing succulents to be in the bathroom because of the humidity . It doesn't always work but it's worth a try Smiling
