Thread OP

Hello Y'all,

I'm hoping for a few good suggestions for some plants in an awkward spot here in Austin, TX. I have a section that is about 5 wide and maybe 20 feet long with an 8% or so grade (one inch drop every foot). It has heavy shade all day long, so St. Augustine grass won't grow there even if it wasn't awkward to water. It is a buried utility easement between the fence and a new office/shed and major drainage route between houses and water coming off the shed roof. In these heavy rains it has a little stream running through it. It used to have some large shrubs there, but 5 days of snow killed those. I'm looking for something that will keep the soil in place, is low maintenance (especially water since it is an awkward area to water - mowing or such would be okay) and preferably could take some foot traffic from my young kids. The preferences are in that order.

One thought I've had is Asiatic Jasmine since it grows well in deep shade, although it is a little hard to walk on and I don't think it likes traffic.

Any other or better thoughts?

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Stephen

Welcome Stephen! I read your post earlier. We're in west Austin and have St. Augustine in sun and shade.

I think crawgarden's suggestion about a photo would be helpful. I've tried to visualize the area, but a photo would be great!
