Donna hello, Marys reply was perfect, yes those holes , you would never notice if the roots had been there. I think as Mary stated, I would take them and replant them in another area since you haven't seen any new growth, and see if that works, The only thing I have really had to hurt a iris is rot, or being too wet. I remember one year I was out planting irises, and accidently left one laying out on the deck, its little rhizome uncovered just laying there, and didn't find it, until the next spring, right after we had the coldest winter, even a strong ice storm. I took the little iris ,and planted it, and it grew for me. Maybe that's one reason irises are my favorites ! How God made something with such fragile, lovely, and colorful blooms, be so tough is just amazing!!!

Muddymitts (Mary) & Joyfulirises, I threw them away, :0( I no longer have them. I feared it was a bug or disease of leone kind and would spread to my good plants. Now I wish I had just taken them to the corner of the yard and replanted them. And you are right, you can't kill them. Aunt Elsie used to thin hers out, she would dig up a lot of them and throw them away off in the ditch it in the edge of the woods. Next spring we would notice they had come up a& were blooming!

Yup. The only reason to throw away rhizomes is if they are soft and mushy (rot) or if you have so many of them that you can't possibly find homes for them all.

Yeah, now I know. My fear made me throw them away to avoid spreading something terrible to the rest of my plants. They had not put up a single shoot all spring, summer nor through that fall. Will good rhizomes skip a season of growth and then grow next season?? I've never seen that.

It's odd that they didn't. And there might have been something wrong with them that they didn't. But it wouldn't have been anything that could spread to the others -- it would have just been an anomaly to those rhizomes. Or to the conditions when you planted them. Were they all the same cultivar, or different? Were they all planted at the same time, and in the same place? Did you get them from the same place/vendor?

It's hard to answer your question. Good rhizomes generally go ahead and develop a root system after planting. But as joyfulirises said -- they can lay dormant, even on top of the ground, and survive that -- and if planted, then go ahead and grow. So I guess the best answer to your question is: rhizomes *can* skip a season and grow the next season. Shrug!

Sounds like they may have been "mother" rhizomes. Had they bloomed before and not put out any increases (babies)?

They were bought from Brecks. They had been growing in their clump fer 3-4 years and had bloomed beautifully and mutliplied. Then suddenly this past summer after this cold hard winter this happens, and it might have happened anyway, may have had nothing to do with our harsh cold winter. I was just very concerned with the bunches of small holes in the bottoms of the rhizomes, like a. It or something had bored into the bulbs. I've grown iris all my gardening life, never seen this.

Well They have some good prices, but very little available. Hard to believe that would be sold out of everything already. Unless they have only a small clump of each thing.
