After wrestling daylilies out of the ground, try squirting the roots all over with a strong spray of water to make dividing easier.

This popped up randomly on my home page, and I love it! I pull and wiggle rather than cutting, but some plants make really dense root clumps. This would work great with hostas, too. Fire hose type nozzle, great idea there, too.
