Counting them, yes, but perhaps as future snacks on legs... We're working on a good dog-chicken relationship, hope it takes.

Taking a bit of a sun break - imagine that! We successfully left the birds on their own for an overnight camping venture (went to Deception Pass camp ground Sunday afternoon). I had some misgivings as a couple of them have figured out how to hop up to the top of the fence from about midway down the chicken ladder, then fly down to the outside of their coop, but then unable to fly back in to the coop. We tacked up a very ugly plywood scrap to stop the escapees, then left their chicken door open so they could come and go and not be cooped up in the henhouse all day, hoping for no predators. Came back to 12 chickens all inside the yard. I think the solution to the escapees will be to add a clear corrugated roof over the chicken ladder so they are unable to hop to the fence. The predator issue will likely be an electric door opener of some sort that we can set to open and close at dawn and dusk. Research needed for that.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

My sister just got me this great piece of artwork for the chicken yard. His head is on a big spring that bobbles in the wind. Absolutely love it! Who remembers Foghorn Leghorn, "I say I say."

Chicken update: The little rooster has recently started crowing - badly, but I'm sure he'll improve. He's also been a good watch dog - I had an eagle swooping low over the coop the other day, ran outside, and he had all his ladies safe underneath the coop.

I did finally find a white mulberry, which I've wrapped with tulle to protect until it gains some girth. Sadly, the persimmon I initially planted just up and died on me - no reason, it was fine one day and just a limp biscuit the next.

Catching up here, love the chickens and watching them grow! We are planning a coop too, collected some scrap wood, corrugated sheets of metal and windows already, just waiting for hubby to get the inclination to start.
