When my plumeria were supposed to be waking up, one was not having any of it. I didn't notice initially because the new growth is usually a deep purple color. When it dried out and shriveled like this one case of frostbite I saw a few years ago, I knew it was in trouble.
So, I amputated. Since I don't have any duplicates of this particular plumeria and neither does my mother who gave it to me, I chopped a sizable chunk off the trunk, nipped the dead tip, and planted my new cutting as a backup.
It only took a couple months, but my plumeria is now growing vigorously. It has 5 new branches developing at the top and the little cutting is rooted and growing 2 new branches of its own. I'll have to update when it blooms. I know it is a red variety, but I don't know the cultivar and I've never seen the blooms.
NOTE: The big one is in a 10-inch terra cotta pot and the little one is in a 6-inch plastic pot.
