Thread OP

Anyone have an effective way to eradicate chamber bitters?

These wicked weeds are apparently via China, and are becoming rampant in southeastern North Carolina. Nothing seems to effectively eliminate them... reducing them requires being very sure to pull them, all of them, before they seed. Or, you can mix "strong" weed killer with surfactant, and hope it doesn't rain for a few days. Did not have any to deal with six years ago! Let us know if any of y'all have a cure... thanks.

Pull, pull, pull, use weed-wacker to give you more time if needed, before seeds ripen. I have the same problem and have spent hours pulling this plant this year. The cuteness of this plant lulled me into not taking the few I saw the past few yrs seriously. Now I've got thousands. I pulled about 10 gallons of them up today. If you can get 'em all up before the seeds drop, it should be a lot easier next year.

At least the seeds don't seem to go very far. Like you said, they need to be removed completely, not half-heartedly. Start with your most "prized" spots and keep them clean, moving into other areas as you have time.

If you have areas with nothing but CB, you can smother them easily with cardboard covered with mulch.

I think next year, I'm going to have DH put a pre-emergent down to prevent the seeds from sprouting in the first place. Sighing!

I have high hopes for a bunch of seeds I just ordered so I'm going to keep pulling what I missed, and smothering as appropriate. Since the CB sprouts so late, I'm hoping to already have a thick cover of more desirable sprouts shading the ground well by May of next year. I've defeated many weeds that were much more formidable than CB, I'm not intimidated. Don't even need gloves for it.

More formidable? Blinking I thought chamber bitter was bad! What did you find worse than chamber bitter? Crying

TORPEDOGRASS, berry vines, goutweed (Aegopodium), dollar weed (Hydrocotyle), solid carpet of cherry laurel sprouts under a mature tree, Nandina, black bindweed (Fallopia convolvulus - I lost that one), purple nightshade vie (Solanum dulcamara), Canada thistle. I'll take a crop of CB sprouts over an established infestation of any of these.

I haven't had any of those yet. Crossing Fingers! But, I am still digging out the wild violets. Sighing!

Awww! I love the violets. They struggle in my yard, the soil is so dry.

I liked them until they started taking over the grass. Sighing! I work hard to have my flowers and the grass in their designated areas, so I try to keep one out of the other and vice versa. But the violas didn't get the memo. Hilarious!

I can respect that. Most of our "lawn" doesn't have much actual grass. It's "other plants."
