Three years ago we returned to Hawaii for our 35 anniversary and while we were there, brought back packages of a red and a pink ginger. The red ones were everywhere- first thing I saw at airport.
Then my brother brought me a red one that was potted from their trip.

Well last year's freeze killed them; they were planted in ground.

Would someone have extra ones to trade? Or for postage?
Thks

They are Alpinia purpurata. They are so not hardy outside of at least zone 10A, 10B is better. You can grow them in containers, they have to be a certain size to bloom, so you may've to keep stepping them up. I grow them, but unfortunately, they are not on my Texas plant specific list to be able to ship there for the nematode quarantine.

I would suggest you look on ETSY at a seller 'Yeybroms'. He ships out of Puerto Rico and is a licensed nursery with certification to ship everywhere. He commonly has ALpinia purpurata in a variety of colors

Late response...
You could also look into getting a hardier type of ginger.
There is Hedychium Coccineum which can have a bunch of red flowers on the end.

One of my personal favorites is Shampoo Ginger which is definitely in Hawaii. Native Hawaiians will use the liquid from the red cones of the plant as shampoo! It doesn't have the nice red flower on the end, but those big red cones that shoot up are really odd and exotic looking.

@MinxFox
I do have the shampoo ginger and the Hedychium but not the coccinea...
but I want the A. purpurea! Well, the next time my brother and family goes to Hawaii, I'll ask them to bring me back one again.

My favorite Hawaii nursery probably has it but their website is down for "upgrading."
Wait a day or so and go to Vintage Green Farms. Their shipping costs are ridiculously low for the distance they have to travel.

This is also commonly available on ETSY. You probably will not get a real plant though...just a start

I bought two clivia plants that are not blooming but are beautiful plants. They have been in my garage because I didn't want to risk the possibility of a freeze here in Tucson, AZ. I put them outside for a day because it was nice and I want to grow them outside. I looked at them at the end of the day and all the leaves were drooping. I thought well it has to get used to it so I left it out another day. I checked on it and it looked like it was dying!! I put it back in the garage. I don't want to grow it in the garage. What did I do wrong here???

Welcome! I hope we can help you. It sounds like your Clivias have been sunburned. Plants have to be introduced to outdoor sun very gradually. In your area it might take 2 weeks or more. The soil may have dried out (baked) also. I don't know it they can be saved but I would try by watering and keeping them in a shady spot for a few days and see if they perk up.
