Calycanthus ssp. There are two species with red flowers: Calycanthus floridus (Carolina Allspice) and Calycanthus occidentalis (California Spicebush). I know California Spicebush smells like old red wine barrels.

The petals of occidentalis are typically narrower giving it a more spidery appearance. I think floridus is more likely.

It sure looks like Carolina Allspice (Calycanthus floridus) to me.
