I took these photos 8 years ago while visiting San Diego and I thought it was False Goldenaster (Heterotheca sessiflora) but I'm just not really sure. Hoping someone can correctly ID it for me.

Its neither of the plants mentioned. Note the notches in the petal tips.

@CPPgardener, do you recognize this?

hmm, photos I've been looking at of yellow Malephora show longer, narrower petals. Confused

I used to live in So Cal but I admit to knowing nothing about their plants. I always loved the way they could grow bougainvillea and ice plants. They just used to tumble down escarpments and canyons. Magical.

Unfortunately I'm not that up on natives, but one of the guys at work used to work at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and he might know or know someone who does. I'll check with him on Monday.

Thanks so much John, much appreciated. I took the photos in the San Diego area but I can't recall if it was in Point Loma, or a little farther north in the La Jolla/Torrey Pines area.

Do you remember if the plant was succulent? It tooks like some of the Delasperma with tiny prickly leaves but the flower is not a Delasperma flower.

Could it be a Deinandra species?

Thanks sooby!! *Blush* LOL, the blooms do very look similar to Deinandra! I took the below photos of Deinandra fasciculata during that same trip in August, 2013 and they are similar in appearance.

I'll have to do a google search and look at more types of Deinandra and see if I can find a match.

That's not rain, its smoke! Our AQI has been off the charts - literally! The AQI index goes from 0 to 500. The other night, it was 750.

Back to this plant... Deinandra, commonly known as Tarweed because of their distinctive smell, usually grows to 3 or more feet tall. I don't know of any tiny ones but your plant really does look like one in miniature.

OOooo... look at Deinandra clementina - Catalina Tarweed

@Daisyl, we drove through Reno last night on our way to Idaho, it was bad! Salt Lake City seemed even worse!
