Bukiniczia cabulica, what a fascinating plant. I would love to try growing this. Does anyone have plants or seed for sale or trade?

In 2012, I obtained seeds from the NARGS seed swap.
These were done as winter sow, and produced two plants.
One died on transplant, and I was hoping the other would come back after the winter.

This spring 2014, seeds were from Plant World Seeds in the UK.
They were sown onto moist vermiculite and placed under fluorescent lights.
Germination was in 6 days in very warm basement at 75 ºF.

Dr. Deno calls this plant Dictyolimon macrorrhabdos and says it needs 70ºF and light.
Other names for it is:--- Aeoniopsis cabulica

How are the seedlings doing Caroline? Do you have a photo of them? Are they winter hardy for you?

Our spring is late this year so I am still waiting to see if that one plant shows up.
Will do photo of current seedlings.

It is described as a hardy biennial in the UK, so I do not expect flowers until 2015.

According to the Catalogue of Life, all three of these names (Bukiniczia cabulica, Aeoniopsis cabulica, and Dictyolimon macrorrhabdos) are accepted names and are not synonymous. This means either that the research has not reached the point of reclassification or that they are three separate plants. This could explain the differences in their descriptions. The Russian site mentioned in one of the threads pertaining to the plant, for example, says the plant is described by various sources as perennial, biennial, and monocarpic.

The plant which people are showing under the name Bukiniczia cabulica at this site is a biennial/monocarp and hardy down to at least zone 3.

All the photos I find using Google Search show the same plant we are talking about in this thread. One blog site makes this statement: "Bukiniczia cabulica (formerly Aeoniopsis cabulica) is a biennial that forms offsets, but will also self-seed if you let it". According to COL two of these names are accepted names, one is considered to be a provisionally accepted name.
Bukiniczia cabulica is an accepted name

Research on photos under these three names show them all to be the same plant. So how would we handle that in our Database? I agree with Lori at this time for the three names. Seems to me that Bukiniczia cabulica should be the accepted name and the other two be listed as synonyms.

Have you had the opportunity to remove the bloom stalk, thus forcing the plant into the perennial category? Would love to hear your experience with this plant as I would like to become successful in growing it.

Thanks for all of the links, Lynn, but they're not links to taxonomic sites. The information in our database is taken from taxonomic databases, and we therefore have entries for all three names. As long as the COL lists them as accepted names (or provisionally accepted names) rather than synonyms, we'll keep all three entries open. Similarities in appearance and habit are important characteristics, but they aren't the deciding factor. At some point, DNA tests will be performed to learn whether these three plants are the same. If they are, two of the names will be reclassified as synonyms. Until that has been done and the information in the Catalogue of Life has been changed, we'll continue to have three entries for the three plants.

I've only had it since 2011, grown from seed that was wild-collected from the Batura Glacier area in Pakistan. A couple of plants have overwintered twice but they are still very small so I don't expect any blooming this year. Other rock gardeners here grow it very successfully, and have it self-sowing. When/if mine form flower stalks, I will just let them bloom to (hopefully) shed seeds. (The blooming is rather an anticlimax with this plant, since it's the foliage that's the show)

Do you know what type of winter conditions they prefer? Also what the best conditions are for self seeding?

Well, since this is a plant that's hardy in a chinook-prone zone 3, I'd say it's not especially finicky! Chances are that winter wet would do it no good, as a guess.
Any non-sterile plant that gets pollinated is capable of self-seeding, so the second question isn't really answerable. If a hardy plant is grown and produces seed and the seed drops on the ground (rather than getting blown or washed away or eaten by something), then it pretty much falls to chance as to how many seedlings you end up with.

-I was away a great deal of the time last year?

Started another batch in my kitchen.
On moist vermiculite at 70ºF or 20ºC
Sown on 23 January and there are sprouts today on the 30 January.
Not really under much light, but warm.
I hope that I can keep these going!

Caroline that is great news. It sure didn't take them long to germinate. I would love to see photos of what they look like when they first sprout.

Revisiting this thread and checked Catalogue of Life. Seems that they have now changed Aeoniopsis cabulica as being a synonym of Bukiniczia cabulica as of September 2015.

Dictyolimon macrorrhabdos is still an accepted name.
