I'm trying to identify what kind of insect leaves this kind of marking on a plant.

It looks to be leaf miner damage.

Is it widespread or just on this one leaf? What sort of plant is it?
I don't think it's insect damage. Leaf miners leave a wider, wandering trail. Looks more like some sort of fungus or virus to me.

I have had leaf miners in this past and this looks different.

its like a white powder on the leaf that almost looks like it has been "drawn on" - and as you can see in the picture, it opens up in ever widening circles. The pattern always looks exactly the same any time I see it.

I find it now and then on the underside of leaves of various plants I am growing. The picture is a leaf from a hot pepper plant.

Have also found it on tomatillo leaves.

There is something called a ringspot virus, but I can't find much information.
