I have a lepismium cruciform and noticed today what I thought was a bird feather is actually a stem that was completely dried out and dead. It snaps like an old twig when bent.
Is it sunburn? It is winter in Aus atm but this is beneath a polycarbonate roof that lets through light at like 50%. Not that it gets massive amounts of sun though.

Ive had it, it was doing OK, i think I overwatered and then it croaked. I dont know whats this plants problem because I wasnt able to figure out its workings. But it DID pop out these dead stems from time to time so I assume something is amiss

I'm not sure if I still have a Cacto-Correia (Lepismium cruciforme) out among my few Rhipsalis plants or not but once our current thunderstorms pass I'll go out and take a look. My Lepismium (and the related Rhipsalis) have been extremely neglected over the years and the plants have had brittle stems that snap right off, which is likely due to lack of sufficient water. My plants haven't been repotted in years and what soil is left in the pots allows the water to run right through; they are likely still alive due to the high humidity we have here in Florida.

name's Stefan(upper right corner)...and the answer is :I dont know. I cant pinpoint what went wrong with mine own, much less yours due to the unfamiliarity with your conditions and care. And the soil.

Thank you for the mention, Stefan. Hi, Jim! I don't have much to add to what Lin said, that it's an epiphyte. A pic of the whole plant could give a better sense of overall health.

So I trimmed all the dead bits off last night as I didn't want to make it worse if it was a disease. Where the dry parts are there is no living tissue but on either side of the dryness there could be.
I think it had been in this pot a while before I purchased it, it wasn't root bound but the top layer was solid. I have repotted it and gave it a little water. Its probably the third or fourth time its been watered since probably may.

I've attached a photo of it repotted and the dry stems I cut off.
