We bought a new house and I am unsure what to do. I am looking to figure out what to do in front of the tall deck. Mainly left and right of steps. This picture was from the winter and is a bit old.. have since removed everything from these planting beds and the ropes and things. I plan on removing the lattice and doing horizontal slats. Right there at the inside corner by the steps looks like a great place for a tall shrub... with lots of desirable features year-round. I don't know where you are (and therefore what is hardy), but I would suggest looking into Calycanthus 'Aphrodite' since it blooms all summer with fragrant red flowers, grows to 8', and should do well in a sunny place such as that looks like.

Certainly there are more ideas that would likely go well there also, such as a dwarf or weeping japanese maple that could take sun (laceleaf, variegation, new growth color, fall color, winter stem color, and/or etc are all possibilities). Are there themes you particularly like? (Variegation, leaf shapes, fragrance, evergreen, ???) Knowing where you live would help. These are just the ideas that came off the top of my head.

I should have mentioned I am in central Virginia. This area gets sun all day long. I really like texture and muted colors of white and purple. We live surrounded by overgrown woods that are very wild looking so I am thinking more formal may be best to contrast the wild of the woods.. but I am not sure.

I tend to agree with SkirtGardener about something tall in front of that unbeautiful - what? brickwork? on the right.

On the other side, something similar but closer to the ground, maybe a clump of Ricinus https://www.finegardening.com/... (unless you have small children who might eat the beans before you neutralize them) or a smoke bush or dark-leaved elder.
That would be the backdrop; then I would put a few smaller shrubs - juniper, myrtle, rosemary... and something dense and leafy and low in the front - alyssum. mondo grass, thyme, even some kinds of geranium would work.
The three-level arrangement and limited palette will give the garden some formality, but give each bed a sinuous outline and curved profile, to break up the severity of all those straight lines.

What a beautiful home! Totally agree on the lattice being removed and the slats being
used. What level of gardener are you? I personally wouldn't put in any trees if you
are surrounded by woods. I would go with two awesome planters on each side of
the steps. Since this is full sun I would plant a few varieties of Cannas for upright
plants or even some perennial Hibiscus that would add fall color. Since this is the main
entrance you might be wise to go with different perennial planting so that there is some
thing of interest in several seasons. Do a darker mulch with your plantings.
