I have these all over the garden. Some are labeled A. hariana, others A. bakeri and still other A. bugensfortensis.
However
The photos that I see for these names dont truly fit my plants.

The leaves on mine seem MUCH longer and snakelike than those of the photos that I have seen on the Net.
Any ideas as to their ID??

Thanks

Richard

I can't give you the answer but I can give you some options. Can you share a flower picture?

There are (at least) 2 groups of aloes with lots of spots on their leaves: the maculate aloes (which I think may be relevant here) and the mosaic aloes (of which harlana is one).

The mosaic aloes tend to have stiff, glossy leaves. A semi-complete list of mosaic aloes: djiboutiensis, elegantissima, erensii, harlana, hemmingii, jucunda, mcloughlinii, parvidens, peckii, pirottae, somaliensis, suffulta. A bunch of those can be ruled out based on size or whatever, but those are some names to look at in this category.

The maculate aloes number about 40 and they can be broken down by various features. The flowers are typically helpful and often necessary for identification in this group. They tend to be bulbous at the base, usually constricted right above the ovary. The presence of spots on the lower leaf surface would rule out about half this group. I can walk you through the key in the Definitive Guide if you think it's a maculate aloe.

Not all aloes with spots fall into either of these groups (bakeri for example does not). I am just trying to see if we can work out the big picture, then divide and conquer.
