Will someone, please, tell me what this is. It was here when we bought the place. Don't know if it's supposed to be a tree or a bush. Have searched the web and can't find it.

Welcome!

It looks like a flowering quince. Does it have thorns? Flowers in spring? If that's what it is, a shrub.

It doesn't flower, as far as I have seen, and it doesn't have thorns.

it looks like the shrub is cut down every year. Flowers only grow on the previous year's wood (not branches growing the same year), so each time it gets cut down, the flowering capability is also removed.

It looks like flowering quince to me, too.

Thanks. That's probably the problem. Since I didn't know what it was, I didn't let it grow. I will now.
