Have purchased some "Major Wheeler' honeysuckle to plant on our barbed wire/chain link fencing down at our rural cabin. For those who may have this beautiful honeysuckle, if I want it to cover about 20' of fence either side of our corner flagpole seen in this photo. Thumb of 2021-09-21/Peggy8b/a01a54.

How many plants do you would think I need? Literature and our database say you get 6-20' length from a plant. Therefore do you think two plants would accomplish what I'm wanting? I plan to plant these two at the two outside posts left and right of the flag, hopefully training them along the fencing AWAY from the flag corner if possible.
Two is what I've ordered, but could order more. Not really trying to have it go down the entire fence line, as that would end up one day blocking our viewing of deer that hang out on that side of the property. I merely want to provide fragrance along with pollinator and hummer action once established.

Hmmm, no replies. I decided to plant out the two on one side only. They are looking good at my recheck last week. No signs of stress, bugs or disease. They seem to like the sandy soil there, too. They have about tripled in size in the 2 months they have been plalnted. Will have to start training the vines/runners soon. I ended up planting them equidistant between the flagpole and rightmost tree on the fence to the right side of the flagpole. If they do nicely, I'll order 2 more plants this spring and plant those 2 on the fence to the left of the flagpole. I hope they prosper there. Really want some fence coverage and scent.

I don't have experience/advice about fence coverage, but I can tell you that you won't get much fragrance from Lonicera sempervirens. Since it is mostly an ornithophilous species (hummingbird pollinated, in this case) it has no need to attract moths with fragrance.

It is one of the best hardy plants for attracting hummingbirds, though! Green Grin!

You can always alternate your vine choices down the fence. One for the hummingbirds, one for your nose, etc. As lovely as it smells, avoid Lonicera japonica because it is terribly, terribly invasive.

Yes, @Danita, I'm well aware of invasive Lonicere japonica. It grew along the back fence of a yard I lived at when I was a child in Montgomery, Alabama. I read somewhere on the net that Major Wheeler is not so invasive. Sorry to hear it has little scent.

It is certainly not crowded with 42 acres to spread out on, I just prefer it not jump the fence and spread over ground (like kudsu and MG's) into the pasture, as we lease that to a rancher for 12 young heiffers and a yearling bull. I'd have to kill it if that happened, which I hear isn't easy.

Actually, I am looking forward to growing this plant some day, because it doesn't have the fragrance. The fragrance gives me migraines.i need more hummingbird flowers. Hurray!

I'll let you know how it does downstream, Evelyn. I'm hopeful now that it's taking off in that sandy soil down there. Smiling

I have 2 Major Wheelers in large pots on either side of my fountain in the front. This was their first year, and they didn't do too bad. The few flowers the got did attract some hummers. I'm hoping they do better next year. Once they get about a foot above or outside the trellis, I weave them back in to 'thicken' them up.

I'll be weaving mine back down once they reach the top of the chain-link fence, too. This will be my first time growing any type of honeysuckle. I just hope they can get by with us only going to the cabin (to water them) every 2-3 weeks. We'll just have to wait and see how that goes.

Oh, dear, @Evelyninthegarden, I just saw this post. They looked healthy, more filled out and very green, but now too much growth in January (last visit to the cabin). They were about double in height and width from their planting since last summer. I suspect they will have taken off this spring. We're going down one day next week and I'll get back to you on their status this year.
