Thread OP
Illinois (Zone 5a)
Hello,

I have 2 questions. First, what is the proper name of this plant? Second, am I able to cut off some of the old part of this plant? It only lives outside about 5-6 months a year and is becoming a lot move in and out.
Thanks!
Jen

A euphorbia, perhaps trigona/ African Milk Tree, Candelabra Cactus? Why not post it in the Cactus and Succulent forum; I'm sure the knowledgeable people there could give you lots of advice. I expect they can certainly be cut back to manage their size and to propagate new plants if you should so wish. I can see how it would be a challenge to move in and out twice a year! Good luck!

Yes, it is a Euphorbia, and yes, you can take a cutting and use that to start a new plant. Wear gloves and be sure not to touch the white sap that comes out under pressure when the skin is broken. You could cut here for example:

The mother plant will branch after the cut, and the cutting should develop roots within 2-3 months.

These plants are large trees in nature and while they do fine in containers, they seem to enjoy (or require) being cut down and restarted every few years.
