Only time will tell.....
I do believe autumn is finally here! The nights here dip down into the 50's at night and the cool morning air has a crispness to it. The water in the neighbor's pond has a mist dancing on top of it every morning. The leaves of the trees have started to turn their beautiful autumn colors and begin their journey to the ground. Plants have begun to recover from the sweltering, humid summer we in the south are notorious for.
To me, this time of year is when I look forward to the most. Its a time to reflect back on summer and figure out what went right and what still needs improvement. It's a great time to spend with the grandbabies and explore the apple orchards and pumpkin patches. It's a great time to finish any yard projects that were put off (again because of the notorious heat and humidity). It's a great time to celebrate the bounty of the harvests that farmers have tended to all summer.
What is it you like to do in the autumn? What are your favorite activities?

It's a crunch time for me in preparing to move non-hardy plants, and all of the other stuff that has been waiting for cooler weather to tackle, like major cleaning, the heavier aspects of yard maintenance when the chainsaw comes out, digging up baby tree sprouts, repotting some potted plants, raking leaves into flower beds, cleaning windows, starting new smother areas to cultivate, deciding on a project or two to create some gifts for Christmas, then creating them. The non-summer part of the year is the hard work part of the year for me.

Part of me is excited to think about how nice future accomplishments will be, but the part of me that has to do them is dreading, and the part that gets bored just sitting in the A/C so I don't pass out is happy to be able to get busy. Often it means the end of needing to water plants with the hose as the temps get cooler, so that's a good thing.

I do love the burst of exuberant growth that most potted plants experience just before being moved inside or to greenhouse for winter, and am looking forward to all of the winter bloomers inside & out. Some years I do the fall-planted flats of pansies, some ornamental cabbage/kale, and that's usually a fun change from so many months of Zinnias.
