Sometimes we gardeners succumb to conventional wisdom, only to discover that it may be conventional, but it's not wise.

Hear Hear! I could not agree more. Trees all around Baton Rouge and the surrounding area have become victims to this bizarre rite of spring....to the detriment of beautiful Crape Myrtles every where. Stop the madness.....please.

Perhaps cities should form "crepe murder patrols" wherever crepe myrtles grow and are butchered. They could do an ad campaign and then the patrols could don "Crepe Murder Patrol" shirts and pay friendly visits to the owners of murdered crepes. They could offer the owners a pamphlet that explains how to properly treat crepe myrtles.

That may be an answer grin....the LSU Co-operative extension puts out the word every year...Bob Souvestre has a Sunday column in the paper and he rails against Crape murder...Local nurseries offer pruning advice....and folks keep lopping them back....and wonder why the trees split during high winds and rain.

I applaud LSU's efforts. Thumbs up I do think a personal, face-to-face encounter would be more effective if done properly.
