Hi! It's many years since you wrote this comment that perhaps it did not have enough sunshine… this aster is shade tolerant.
I grow mine on the north shady side of my land where it flourishes in my sandy soil.
Native Plant Trust notes: " Forests, forest edges, fields, roadsides, waste areas, sometimes weedy and usually found in at least partial shade of trees and/or buildings."
