I found several of these "gourds" along a highway near Covington, IN. It had been mowed so I didn't see any plants to see where they came from. The seeds inside are tiny, smaller than a grain of sand. The end reminds me of a velvetleaf seedpod but they don't get this big. Anyone know what it is?

Looks like an enormous poppy pod. Does it rattle softly when shake it?

Very slightly. To be honest, a mouse got into the bag I put them in and opened them all.
I think you're right, tho bc I found this pick looking 4 poppies and its a match on both ends!! All the other poppypod pics showed round ones. Can anyone identify what kind of poppy it might be?? Do u know when I should plant them in zone 5?

Welcome!

I would toss the seed were you want it to grow and let Mother Nature do the rest.

Every day is a school day.
Now it makes sense ....with such giant pods they can get the latex/the opium easily from the seed pods. It would be much harder on tiny pods.

Grown legally the seeds gives us morphine and codeine.

Also know as Bread Seed poppies. If you want to grow some, go down to the grocery and buy a bottle of Poppy Seeds from the spice section.

Not going 2 plant them. Mice got most of the seeds b4 I even knew what they were. I'm not into opium and I am not going 2 help the local kids get into it. My regular, little pod, poppies r beautiful and that's what I'm interested in.
U should be aware that if u have a lot of poppy seeds on that bagel, u could test positive for opiates.

It's been known for a long time that poppy seeds can cause urine drug screening to show positive.

The last time I bought poppy seeds - a very small spice container of them - I had to ask for them at the service counter of the grocery store Blinking

Really? That's crazy!

Domini01, You won't get all the neighbor kids high by growing bread seed (opium) poppies. First, the kids won't recognize them and second, harvesting is a little more complicated then that.
