Hi,

Can anyone confirm if this is a Dracaena Marginata?

Welcome!

From what your photo shows, I don't think so. Maybe Cordyline?

I believe it is D. marginata.

Comparing pictures (Cordyline vs. marginata) online.. they do look very similar.
Is there a way to tell the difference?

By looking at the roots. From the Encyclopedia of Houseplants: "Cordyline has a creeping rootstock and its roots are white and knobbly. Dracaena has a non-creeping rootstock and the smooth-surfaced roots are deep yellow or orange."

Is "creeping rootstock" defined? I've not heard this term before.

Dracaena marginata is significantly shinier than Cordyline. Cordyline also 'pinches' near the base of the leaf to make a semblance of a petiole. This is a Dracaena.

I was wondering the same. Thinking This struck me as creeping (and this is a Dracaena). Hilarious!

No, that was the entire explanation. The question was how do you tell them apart? That was all I could find that was more definitive then leaf descriptions. Smiling

"Creeping rootstock" is another term for a rhizome, according to Wikipedia.

Sometimes I don't for sure, from pics. Just feeling more strongly toward one than the other. That's as strong as I can go for this one.

Hard to tell for sure but from the width of the leaves, it reminds me more of Dracaena than Cordyline. As it grows taller, the identification may become clearer.
