Seed-Catcher Tip

An old pizza pan can be wired under a bird feeder for a great seed catcher tray! Even an aluminum pie plate would work, if you punched some holes in it for drainage.

This is one reason why I don't have a bird feeder. The offcast has just attracted way too many squirrels and chipmunks! Problem solved, thanks to you @critterologist !
You don't kick walls down, you pull the nails out and let them fall.

Glad to help! The type of feeder makes a difference as well. Any that have bottom openings (like the one in the photo) will also scatter seed as they swing in strong winds. Putting sunflower seed in a mesh feeder like the "No No" brand works pretty well... plenty of chaff scattered, but few seeds. ("NO/NO" doesn't mean squirrels can't get at the seed, but it does mean squirrels won't destroy the feeder, because it's made with NO wood and NO plastic.)

They even make mesh "seed balls" that hold 2-3 cups of sunflower seed.

I'm not sure you can feed birds without attracting squirrels, though.
