I just got a amaryllis bulb online and potted it up 3 days ago. I watered it too. Does it need fertilizer at all during the growing process? I'm growing it indoors.

I wouldn't fertilize while it's breaking dormancy or in budding. But 'conventional wisdom' says for the three months after bloom, regular fertilizing is the most important thing you can do, if you wish it to bloom well next year. Some give it a gentle fertilizer while in mid-bloom, but I usually wait. Mine spend the summer outside. As long as they have leaves, I fertilize them (half-strength) monthly until late summer, and as cooler fall weather approaches- then I reduce fertilizer and water in preparation for winter dormancy in my area.

Minerva, one of my favorites! And if the Hippeastrum (AKA amaryllis) doesn't make it until next year, there's no shame in that!

Ken gave spot on advice for fertilizing. No fertilizer until after it blooms. The bulb contains all the food needed for the first blooming. People sometimes tend to overwater at first. Don't water the pot again until you see some top growth. Then water soil when soil feels dry. Overwatering can lead to rot and the "dreaded" outbreak of fungus gnats. That was my early error. It seemed like I had a kitchen full of fruit flies until I realized that I was being dive-bombed by fungus gnats. There are several interesting home remedies for fungus gnats, but often it is just a matter of keeping the soil a bit drier. thumbsup:

I use granule urea as a fertilizer

You can also use horse or caw manure water extract

Potted up last seasons amaryllis bloomers. 14 bulbs total ..still have more to go…
I cleaned them and use alcohol and covered in cinnamon on red fungus on one bulb. The 3 bulbs from Holland last year all had red blotch , only one showed small signs…a fungus called Stagonospora curtisii.

Bea, those bulbs look quite nice now that you have cleaned them.

@bsharf..Hi Barbara… Thank You! they look fairly decent cleaned up. We all look good once cleaned up even old plant collections …Still have 9 more to go…I pop a bit of slow release fertilizer down low under soil level not touching bulb..the roots will eventually . And no water until I see leaf growth just in damp soil.
It's a bit late to probably catch blooms for x-mas but maybe a couple will bloom by New Years. Always need a poinsettia they come in so many colors and variegated now.
I grow these every year in memory of my son . He loved amaryllis…
Have a smiley day 👍
