Sigh its that time of the year. All the seedlings grown from Spring and summer are ready to be stepped up to new pots. I have a few hundred. Got one tray each of Papilliliamnum cross and (Besseae x magnificum)x ? crop #2 done, working on another tray each of those plus a tray of Mehani crosses. Then on to all the Magnificum crosses

How many seedpods did you harvest to get this amount of seedlings, just wondering!? 10? 20?

No only one per plant. Anthurium spadices can produce between 50-300+ seeds per spadix
Thumb of 2021-11-30/Gina1960/015b81

Anthurium produce fruit in the form of berries, not seeds in pods. Depending in the plant, a single berry may contain one seed or up to 4 seeds.

Woah..... 4 seeds in one berry!

They remind me of pomegranete fruit

Yep. I tasted one once. They are mildly sweet. They are spread in nature by birds bats and other small mammals that eat the berries and drop the seeds

Oh my goodness, you must have a lot of patience ... what an undertaking! Will you be selling them once they mature?

This is only the first table full. I have other flats out in the greenhouse left to start when these are done. I do sell some of them. What I tend to do is, either I sell the berries or seeds directly from the plant (it depends if its something I want to spend my time growing out or not). If I decide to keep the seeds and grow them myself, I grow them up to a stage where I can see 'differences' in the seedlings. The most unusual variations, I keep and grow out further. The others, I sell or trade. I have virtually stopped buying new plants myself...I mean, why should I when I can make my own LOL? I cross different plants to make hybrids.

This is an example of 2 seedlings I kept from one grow out. These are Anthurium clarinervium x faustomirandae. These 2 plants were grown from the same crop of seeds, planted at the same time, from a single spadix, under the same conditions. And they look quite different

And these are two Anthurium forgetii hybrids. Again, from the same crop of seeds off of a single spadix. They have similar form but very different coloration and veining

When I sell, I sell reasonably. A nice seedling the size of the ones above is usually $30-35. Most people try and sell this stuff for $80-150 per seedling. So silly.
The first forgetii cross was almost definitely a cross between A. forgetii and A. besseae x magnificum. It has all the hallmarks and is easily identifiable. But the second one, even though they are brothers, resembles the parent forgetii in coloration and the bess x mag not at all!

That's a great hobby and since you make some money, it is also time well spent.

Wow! Looks like lots of fun, but also lots of work!

I'd love to be informed when your seedlings are ready for sale! I've recently started crossing Anthurium myself but it's such a slow process

Right now my newest babies are Anthurium warocqueanum (as the ovule parent)

Since besseae aff is actually an undescribed species (its def not the true besseae) its a wild card genetically.

I have probably 200+ seeds germinating, sown between 10/30 and 11/21.

I do sell plants, but, I have limitations on where I ship to, if you live in a 'nematode' state, (CA, TX, LA, AZ and now MS and AR) you are kind of out of luck. I let my nematode certification go. wasn't worth the trouble as I sell most of my stuff locally, and trade it

Gina, luckily I am not in a 'nematode' state, but I am in cold Colorado. I'd love to be kept in mind for when/if you decide to let go of some Anthurium seedlings - interesting hybrids and just neat plants in general are definitely hard to come by around these parts. Colorado is Hoya hobbyist territory and I'm not the biggest fan of Hoyas unfortunately.

I'll keep you in mind. I have fire ant certification but I let me nematode certification go because I just wasn't using it (I don't ship many actual plants anymore outside the state of FL, and nematode certification costs $$ every year) while Imported Fire Ant cert is free. If I ship at all its in the warm season. I mainly sell anthurium berries and seeds
