Is this Acer griseum?

This tree grows in a low lying area in Pages lake park in Aberdeen, North Carolina. I would think that was planted as an ornamental, since it's near the town hall. I wish I had looked at the leaves earlier.
I tip my hat to you.

That looks like a mature tree but I don't think it's Acer griseum.

Do you have a photo of the leaves?

Agreed.
Pics below show the bark of Acer Griseum on young and mature trees.

shape and form - reminds me of mature birch trees ...

Possibly "River birch" (Betula nigra)

I assume the needles don't go with the tree trunk? Any leaves on the ground?

Silversurfer needs to cut out all that annoying barking...

That's a River Birch - Betula nigra.

WebTucker could take some crisp closeups of the branches/stems so that we can see the dormant buds.

Don't need no stinkin' leaves to make an ID...

You needn't be rude. I asked for leaves because that would be definitive. Silversurfer's photo collection is awesome but obviously you feel you know more than we do. It could very well be a River Birch but why take shortcuts to get there? The photos aren't clear enough to see the classic bark peeling. More photos would be great but in the meantime, maybe you should go sleep it off somewhere...

My replies were to these statements. I wasn't being rude to you or anyone else.

I recognize this tree. I asked for definitive photos of the branches with dormant buds, should anyone else be interested in what those look like without leaves, and to promote the idea of dormant season identification. There really isn't any reason to wait until new leaves emerge.

My knowledge of plants is just that: mine. Whether it is more or less than anyone else's matters little to me. I offer it here to those who request assistance. Everyone is free to take it, leave it, or make fun of it.

I expect I will continue.

Hey guys thanks for everybody's input. I didn't mean to start any kind of argument. I don't think anybody meant anything malicious, so let's just drop that idea.

Ideas that I have seen are great, and I will follow up on them. I'm gonna take some pictures of the buds, and I closer pictures of the bark. I'm gonna look for the leaves, but they are probably gone, mowed/vacuumed up by the town weeks and weeks ago but I'll look anyway.
Thanks to all! This is so much fun, but let's keep it pleasant. That's what this place is all about (to me), and that's why I'm here it's for fun fun fun!
Happy new year all.

Here they are and I think they're definitive. The 1st is of the buds and they look to be birch buds. So I guess river birch is probably correct. The others are other pictures of the bark hope they help. No leaves left though.
