in this Oklahoma City garden. Two Oriental Lilies stood four feet tall and produced deliciously fragrant seven inch blooms... and six Asiatic Lilies, including the unnamed ones in the photos, produced a great show of blooms on eighteen inch stems. After growing them for several years I find myself increasingly amazed that they are not seen in greater numbers in our local gardens. The only reason I can come up with: Lilies are always spoken of as needing very good drainage and our clay soils are always referred to as having poor drainage.
I've found that in light shade under a tree the soil is often rich and friable and drains nicely... and suits Lilies very well.
