anybody here actually grow the avocado trees? am trying to discover why if I plant an avocado (Haas) specifically, it won't grow me a Haas avocado tree with Haas fruits. Or if it needs a cross pollinator when it does get big enough here in zone 9a...
I am trying to research and not getting any sensible resources with real information- even PDatabase just shows everyones little trees with zip for info.

HA! I finally asked the right questions, Haas are self pollinating, I am barely in a viable zone except for a microclimate, fruits do not bear true to seed from tree fruit (uh, do not bear true), I need a variety like Fuerte, Bacon or something else just because they can handle the same cold as the Haas...anything I have forgotten here?

Even if you grow a seed from an avocado hardy to your area, there's no guarantee the seedling will inherit that trait.

The hardiest avocado is Mexicola Grande Improved. I had a tree in CA zone 8. It produced 100's of pounds of fruit every year without a pollinator. Its really good tasting with very thin skin. The Mexicans in my area told me it was one of the avocados that didn't need peeling (but I did - creature of habit).

I will look that one up, thanx Daisyl, didn't expect the seeds to survive that I planted in the first place, but here it is 3 or 4 years later and hanging on.
