These photos are not of a Malvaviscus but of a Hibiscus. I'm not sure of the species or cultivar.

@Horntoad
Your expertise would be helpful in identifying this plant more specifically.

Hi Jayce,

I'm hoping Horntoad (also a "Jay") will be able to offer some guidance. He's studied and grown a lot of Hibiscus species.

Your conure is a cutie! Lovey dubby

How was it originally decided that the cultivar name is 'Blush'? Sometimes plants have a wrong tag.

It looks like H. mutabilis.
Confederate Rose (Hibiscus mutabilis)

Is this plant still alive? In the ground in Indiana? Did you take any closer pics of fully open blooms?

I can't give you a specific cultivar but I am going to agree with Tiffany and say that it is a cultivar of Hibiscus mutabilis. There are a few cultivars out there with this similar color such as Terri's Pink and Rubrus or Rubrum that I believe are interspecific hybrids with the five US native Hardy Hibiscus. They look much like a single Confederate Rose and usually have a much earlier spring and summer bloom season than H. mutabilis which bloom in the fall.

Hi Purpleinopp, i originally had it under the Hardy Hibiscus tag, but after a little research, i read that "Turks Caps" are a hisbiscus whos blooms dont fully open up. therefore i decided that my plant was a Turks Cap. Big Grin

Yes, its in the ground and comes back every year bigger and bigger.
my blooms never fully open, they always get half-way and stop opening. sometimes i tear at the little green base just so that the petals have more room to "breathe" lolol

@Danita Thank you! he is such a spoiled little thing and lovessss selfiess!

@Horntoad Thank you so much for the info. this plant def. blooms in early summer.

Thanks, Jay! Thumbs up
I saw Hibiscus mutabilis in it, too, but it doesn't look quite right for any cultivar/selection that I could find.
Also, I didn't think straight Hibiscus mutabilis would be hardy in Indiana.

Someone on Gardenweb claimed that, "I DID once have a Snyder hybrid of mutabilis and moscheutos."

An H. mutabilis x H. moscheutos hybrid seems like a possibility.

In another thread (and this thread), Jayce said the flowers always remain partially closed which would rule out 'Hapa Red', I think.

FYI, the "green base" is called a calyx. The plural term is calyces. Green Grin!

Also, there is a Pet thread if your conure would like some new friends.

Hibiscus mutabilis is supposed to cross with any of the Hibiscus section Muenchhusia as long as H. mutabilis is the pod parent.

The only Turk's Cap hibiscus that I know about have red blooms and the flowers usually stay tightly closed.
I have found that coffee, tea, and rose can all agree on one thing... water everyday.

Absolutely gorgeous! It seems like there's some other genes in the mix than just H. mutabilis.
