Hi everyone,

first time sending a message here, so still a rookie in all of this gardening theme.

I am currenlty trying to prune a Yucca, and got some information here and there on how to do it, however I am still not entirely sure if I am doing it correctly. should I cut it the way I am doing it or cut the whole trunk?

I send a couple of photos here and I would really appreciate if you could send some experience on this and please let me know if I am doing something wrong.

Thank you!

Hi & welcome! What is the goal of the pruning, the desired end-result?

Hi and thank you for the aid!

I wanted to cut down the long stalks that were coming out of the main trunk so that it can start sprouting new stalks/leaves through the main trunk like I had it a few years ago. Please see photos below from a few years ago.
The stalks were already really big, and wanted to prune them down.

Thank you!

And this is what I would like to have:

And, I wanted to be sure, if the cuts I am doing are correctly made or if I need to perform any other action. exemplified in these close-up photos:

Am I understanding correctly that your goal is to have more branches coming from where the cuts have been made?

When I pruned my Yucca last summer, it made its new growths below the cut line, and also sent out a basal growth.

Sometimes, one trunk manages multiple growths...some just one. But one thing it will surely do, the new growth is below the cut line. So pretty much what you can control is the height you want to maintain for your tree, so it is up to you what height level you want to reasonably handle. I opted to keep a small portion of the previous branch, since I am not sure how many it can make. Been watching other growers pruning other trees and they hard prune but they choose to keep a short portion of the extra branches where they hope bushier leaves will grow from.

Here is mine..it has grown those new leaves, and attempting new branches:

Hi tarev,

Thank you for sharing!

It is also what I was expeting, so after the sprouts are cut, I should expect to have new growths coming out from below the cut line. I made some small nicks on the trunk below the cut line, to try to help to propagate a little better.

I also have some small basal sprouts, however, usually I take them out, since I only want to see sprouts at the top.

It is completely cut down now, hopefully it grows as I expect now Smiling

Keep us posted @LemoGreen how it goes. Just be very patient as you wait, it just takes its sweet time being slow growing.
