I know it's a long‑shot, but I'm trying to find bulbs to grow
Jimbu (
Nepali‑Himalayan leaf garlic) aka "
Jimmu"/"
Jamboo"/"
Faran". There are 2 different species that are used for this herb:
Allium przewalskianum &
Allium hypsistum → I would be happy with either.
I want to use the leaves for cooking, to recreate the flavours in some of the dishes I grew to love while traveling in the Himalayas over a decade ago. It's typically used dried and you can
purchase it dried online, but it quickly loses its flavour after drying. Even though pan‑frying in mustard oil can restore some its flavour, judging from
some of the reviews it seems most of the Jimbu for sale online might be excessively old, most likely on account of how long imported items & mail take to arrive from Nepal …so I was hoping to try growing my own.
Someone who lives in Massachusetts has added
photos of A. przewalskianum bulbs & flowering plants to the
Allium section on the
Pacific Bulb Society wiki. I tried contacting that member over a year ago on Mar. 6 /21 via the email listed on their profile to ask where they obtained it, but never got a reply. Who knows how old those photos are…
I've remained in‑contact with several people living in Nepal and I suppose I
could ask them to try mailing me bulbs, but I doubt they'd ever make it across the ocean
(— my postcards never did!), 'least not before they expired. Ordering plants & seeds from abroad is sketchy as it is. :·S
I probably
will break and order some of the dried herb online to try‑out but will continue to strive to grow my own someday.
Lmk if anyone does know where I can obtain these bulbs.
We're located in the Downriver Detroit area of Southeast Michigan.
Thanks,
