As I try to replace tried & true plants from gardens past here in 10a Fl, here is a gem. Canna warscewiczii. A species plant & a mouthful to pronounce. With other cannas, I struggled with rust like plumerias get. They'd look like crap half way through our summer. This gem did not get this. It's a prolific seeder BUT seeds do not sprout unless soaked. So, it is a cordial plant, well behaved & the foliage & seed pods are equally pretty. Give it a try!

That was a favorite of mine at my last home, I love the seed pods when they are fresh. I have to say mine was not well behaved and did self sow all over but they were easy to pull up and friends welcomed the giveaways.

I might have clipped dried pods off. Back then I was big into trading. None the less, I would not consider them invasive in FL 10a. Great pic of the pods. Remember when everyone wanted canna tropicana? It was the it plant for a hot minute. That was a loser for me. Rust magnet.

Tropicana was a bust for me also. When I grew what I called Canna W (so I would not have to pronounce that full name, Hilarious! ) I lived on an island with heavy soil that was essentially sand and old marsh muck. It held moisture well, sometimes too well. Perhaps that is why the conditions were perfect for germinating the canna seeds. Also, I was not so neat and rarely snipped off the seed pods unless I needed them for a propagation class. I probably gave out many hundreds of seeds over the years. The species cannas always did better for me there. Right after we moved here I rescued a Salmon Canna Canova (?) from Lowes, it is a miniature, less than 2', and has shown no signs of disease or insect problems here.

Tropicanna NEVER did well for me. The big Russian Red does fine here but once the leaf rollers get it in late summer I chop it

I had those in my garden, they were pretty, the flowers didn't last long, but the pods did. As my sun decreased they still grew in abundance but wouldn't flower, so I dug them all up and gave them away.

They must like the moister soil, mine bloomed constantly, even in shade.

If I remember correctly, mine bloomed in dappled sun. I have not grown these since 2012. I've got hard sun & precious shade here so I'll try them in both places while my palm canopy grows. I do remember the foliage in dappled sun being a huge draw for me though. Flowers and cool pods were a bonus.

Yes, the foliage was special, always clean and the new leaves had a faint red edge.

Thanks, it surely was but we were on an island and the tide just kept getting closer each year. Rising sea level is real. It was time to get to higher ground.
